MALLORCAN GRAPE VARIETIES

In Mallorca we have a wide range of highly valued indigenous grape varieties. There are different grape varieties that have been recovered after years and that now, thanks to the work carried out, give us wines with exceptional and differentiating characteristics.

The main autochthonous black grape varieties used to produce wine are the Manto Negro, Callet, Fogoneu or Gorgollassa. If we talk about white grapes, we must mention the Prensal, Giró ros and Malvasia.

Prensal is the most cultivated white grape variety in Mallorca. Its fruit is large and produces wines with a medium alcohol content and fruity tones.

There are areas of the island where historically more different types of grapes have been grown, such as, for example, the northern part of the island, which has received the vast majority of white Malvasia grapes, which offer us aromatic wines with a high alcohol content.

If we talk about areas, we must mention Binissalem where Manto Negro is grown, a variety that gives the wine notes of ripe fruit and, also, a high graduation. The Fogoneu, on the other hand, is grown mainly in the Levante region and produces wines with a low alcohol content and subtle aromas.

There are some varieties that have been close to disappearing, such as the Gorgollasa and Giró ros varieties, together with the mentioned Malvasía, which after much recovery work, have regained importance and today their expansion is remarkable.

The first, Gorgollasa, produces a fruity and light wine. The Giró ros, another autochthonous white grape variety, on the other hand, is a variety that provides a high intensity on the palate. The Callet is a variety of red grape that originates from the Felanitx area and was originally cultivated for the production of wine for local consumption. It produces wine with a long and persistent flavor with notes of red fruits.
