THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SPARKLING

Many people generalize sparkling wines or only know Champagne, but champagne is not the same as cava and today we explain why.

There are several types of sparkling wines depending on the production area. The 3 best known are:

1. Champagne: from the north of France. It is characterized by being tasty and complex. With aromas of honey and vanilla, it is usually a mix of many different producers. Its method used is the champenoise, of fermentation in the bottle. The grape varieties used for this sparkling wine are chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier.

2. Prosecco: from Italy with the Glera grape type. It is characterized by clean, acidic and simple flavors; frothy and persistent bubbles and is an ingredient for cocktails.

3. Cava: comes from Catalonia, Spain mostly and stands out for its flavor of green apples and citrus. It must be fermented in the bottle to be called cava. The grape varieties used to produce cava are Macabeu, Parellada and Xarel lo.

Apart from these three best known types, there are also other sparkling wines from the USA, Europe, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand and Australia; as they are:

  • Lambrusco
  • Asti spumante
  • Crémant
  • Sparkling
  • Sekt
  • Shiraz
