WHITE BAIGORRI FERMENTED IN BARREL CHOSEN THE BEST WHITE WINE FROM RIOJA

The so-called “Oscars of the world of wine”, the International Wine Challenge, have just published the results of their latest tasting edition held in London.

The jury of the most influential competition in the world has awarded 13 trophies to Spanish wines, two of them going to Baigorri elaborations. Thus, Baigorri Fermentado en Barrica obtains 95 points, a trophy and a Gold medal, being chosen as the Best Rioja white wine, while Baigorri BELUS is recognized with 96 points, a trophy and a Gold medal, being selected as the Best Rioja Alavesa wine.

Thousands of wines from more than 50 countries participated in this latest edition of the contest, with an international blind tasting panel made up of masters of wine, master sommeliers, importers, distributors, oenologists, prescribers and specialized journalists.

Baigorri Fermented in Barrel

Made with 90% Viura and 10% Malvasía, it has become one of the 13 Spanish wines awarded in the competition. The jury described it as “a modern and very intriguing take on a traditional Rioja style, combining citrus from Viura with the perfume of Malvasia warmed by toasted oak. Complex, rich, layered with a chalky saline finish.

” For its preparation, all the selected grapes are destemmed by hand, grain by grain, using selection tables by vibration and weight. It macerates for a few hours with its skins to later go to the press. Next, the must goes through a clarification process that allows the solid remains in suspension to be discarded and the must to be left clean. Fermentation and aging takes place in new French oak barrels, together with its lees, batoning regularly for 6-8 months.
