HOW DOES THE OAK BARRELS INFLUENCE WINE?

Initially, the use of wooden barrels had as its main objective the storage, transport and conservation of wine. Hence, different woods were used that came from acacias, poplars, beech, chestnut or cherry trees, adjacent to the wine farms.

Its origin is attributed to the Celts, although it was the Romans who popularized its use when they realized its advantages in terms of handling (they could roll on the ground), resistance, little permeability and dimensions, they implanted it in all the wine-producing areas of the Mediterranean.

With time and the experience gained, the winemakers focused their attention on the oak and the aromatic nuances, as well as the physical properties, that it brought to the wine.

Nowadays there are different materials with which to make the barrels although the preferred one is still oak, however, there are different types among which the French and the American are the most used.
